While Medford resident Olwin “Buster” Hayes, a Vietnam veteran who was raised in Maple Shade and attended Merchantville High School, desperately awaits a kidney transplant, his family and friends are organizing a benefit picnic and gift auction to help with his swelling medical expenses.

The Olwin Hayes Kidney Benefit will take place at the JCC Camps, 400 Tuckerton Road on Saturday, May 30, from 1 to 5 p.m. The organizers are requesting gift baskets, gift certificates, or cash donations to help make the event a success.

Items or donations (made payable to Olwin Hayes Kidney Benefit) can be mailed or delivered to: Nancy Finan, 737 Gravelly Hollow Road, Medford, NJ 08055.

For more information about donations or attending the event, call Nancy Finan 953-3239, Sarah Conrad 654-4226, or Jackie Robel (856) 574-4918.

Buster has been the on-site manager of the JCC Camps for the past 25 years. He has helped many children achieve their goals, always encouraging them to make new friends and helping to shape their lives.

Buster is a really good guy. I haven’t seen him since 1969 at Merchantville High but he always was a congenial and eager to help gentleman. My prayers go out to him. I will try to email this to other Merchantville grads. Prayers to you Buster!
