With about a month to go before signatures are due to the borough clerk’s office, members of a recall committee report that things are progressing toward their goal of holding a recall election for Medford Lakes Mayor Paul G. Weiss.
After the committee of five Medford Lakes residents, including former mayor Davis Wasson as well as residents John J. Gallimore, Anthony Amato, Michael G. Powers, and Louis J. Potter, filed an Intent to Recall with the Borough clerk in late February, they set out to obtain 25 percent of signatures from the borough’s registered voters, as per the process of a recall election.
The committee needs to collect  about 750 signatures in order for the election to take place in November, but Wasson said the committee hopes to obtain about 800.
“Our voting districts are broken up into four districts so we thought to make it simple we would go for 200 a district,” Wasson said.
The deadline to obtain those signatures is 160 days from when the notice was filed, which Wasson said is approaching in mid-August.
Wasson said some residents, although they may agree with the committee’s actions, are weary about signing for a recall election. However, he believes the committee will reach its goal before the deadline.
The intent to recall came after Council’s consideration of a potential shared-services agreement to share police services between Medford Township and Medford Lakes that stirred some controversy in the borough. A significant number of residents opposed the agreement, which would essentially eliminate the borough’s eight-member police force.
